Architecture Photographers:
An interview with Sigurd Quast

Sigurd-Quast, formerly known as eViLKoRnY on deviantART, is a German photographer who has won several National and International Awards, including Germany's Best Digital Photographer in 2008 and has been in the Top 10 of the Sony World Photography Awards in the Architecture category in 2009. Born in Nürtingen, he has pursued his studies in Geoinformatics and is now part of the academic staff at the Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences.

Stellar

How would you introduce yourself in a few words?

My name is Sigurd Quast, living and working in Stuttgart, Germany. I’m a self-taught photographer in many subjects such as architecture/landscape/wedding photography.

Besides that I have graduated with a master’s degree in Geoinformatics and I am employed at a university.

When did you first pick up a camera and what did you start photographing?

I always enjoyed watching artistic photography works. Back in 2006 a friend started to photograph nature and animal stuff in a very good manner. So I asked myself why I should waste my time in looking at great pictures instead of taking my own. With my first money earned I bought myself a DSLR and started to take photos as well.

What do you find interesting about Architecture Photography?

It’s the way to present something in the best but also in the surrealist angle people haven’t seen before. That’s not only defined by geometry but also by light, color and other local attributes.

Iceberg

What are your tools of the trade? Do you think it's important what you shoot with?

Basically it’s important for me what I am working with. As a service provider I have to be 100% sure if I can do a job for a customer or not. But I am not a person who would go out and say "hey look, I have the most expensive and coolest cam ever, go hire me!"

So in presence of other people I don’t define myself in what I’m working with. In the end always the result counts.

What are the challenges you have to face when photographing architecture?

I answered it somehow in the third question. :)

Where do you find inspiration?

People get inspired or manipulated by almost everything around them. People, feelings, music, movies,... So do I.

Blizzard

What do you consider to be a successful photograph?

It’s important that you like your own photos.

You won various photography awards and your works have been featured as Daily Deviations many times over the years; how does that feel?

Thankful but also you get automatically more pressure and higher expectations for your upcoming works. Maybe it’s boon and bane at the same time if you take such things very serious. In my early years as a photographer I took it more serious than I do nowadays.

What are other Photography styles you like and why?

I adore landscape photography because sometimes I need space for myself and I like it to be somehow connected to nature.

I adore portraiture photography because I like it to capture the beauty of humans (no, not only 90-60-90’s).

I adore photography in general because I want to catch emotions. Emotions I feel in a moment and transfer it to the real world to show them other people.

Inaxa

You're going on an all expenses paid holiday and can take an artist, a writer and a singer. Who do you take?

I still want to figure out why I should take all these persons on holiday because this won’t be relaxing holidays for any attending person.

What's your favorite place in the world and why?

Anywhere where it feels like home.

What private place would you like opened specially for you?

A place that is called "you get all the time in the world".

Warped

This is your last day alive — how do you spend it?

Definitely not with a camera. For sure with my beloved in a private place that is opened specially for us.

If you had to sum up Architecture in 3 words, what would they be?

Complex, curious, crazy. My 3 C’s.

I mistype Architecture Photography a lot. So for the funs of it, I'll ask you to shut your eyes and type 'Architecture Photography'!

architecute photography

Haha, that’s really funny now.

Just starting out in photography and really enjoying architecture photos! I look at buildings and surroundings so differently now after browsing so many photos and now having my own equipment. Thank you for these posts!
